Yes – it is true that I am a geek on many levels.\u00c2\u00a0 Computer geek first and foremost – but aviation geek is very high on the list.\u00c2\u00a0 So when an aviation expo comes to Palm Springs – time to fly there and check it out.<\/p>\n
This was actually the first real expo of any size I have visited.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ve always wanted to go to Oshkosh<\/a>, but since I’m a member of AOPA<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0anyway, I figured I’d head over there.\u00c2\u00a0 So I loaded up the 182<\/a>, and with\u00c2\u00a0a\u00c2\u00a0Los Angeles CFI<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in the right seat and buddy Sam (from the flying club<\/a>) in the back – we headed out.<\/p>\n Getting in there was interesting – but we got very lucky.\u00c2\u00a0 For you pilots out there – the arrival procedure was to fly over KBNG, then over the 10 freeway until reaching the 62, then direct to CONES intersection – and contacting PSP Approach 10 miles west of CONES.\u00c2\u00a0 There were SO many planes there, t5hat getting a word in on the frequency was IMPOSSIBLE – even when we were almost over CONES.\u00c2\u00a0 But we lucked out – the controller just got fed up with people calling, and said “OK – everyone stop.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ll call YOU.\u00c2\u00a0 Aircraft at 4700 feet over CONES – what is your callsign?”\u00c2\u00a0 It was me!\u00c2\u00a0 I told him, and he vectored us to the airport immediately.<\/p>\n The show was cool – saw a LOT of interesting planes (jets and piston), products (avionics, pilot supplies, and other goodies) and people (like my buddy Elliott\u00c2\u00a0Sanders<\/a>, and Patty Wagstaff<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 So we split right after that.\u00c2\u00a0 Beat the traffic out, got lunch at Typhoon at SMO, and got home by 4pm.<\/p>\n Pretty geeky.\u00c2\u00a0 I know.\u00c2\u00a0 Too bad.\u00c2\u00a0 I dig it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Yes – it is true that I am a geek on many levels.\u00c2\u00a0 Computer geek first and foremost – but aviation geek is very high on the list.\u00c2\u00a0 So when an aviation expo comes to Palm Springs – time to fly there and check it out.
